But I imagine if an alien saw someone 8 months pregnant and had never heard of the process of mammalian live births before, they'd find the whole concept pretty disturbing.

I saw some interesting commentary on this in a manga set in a fantasy world, where humanoids and reptilians lived side-by-side.
A human mother looked at a lizardwoman's egg and sighed about how convenient it must be, to be able to get on with your business and not have to lug around a growing fetus for nine months.
The lizardwoman looked from her egg to the human's baby bump and sighed about how safe it must feel, to know your baby is always with you and can't be misplaced or crushed by accident, and is always the right temperature.
